State Rice Festival Results

Oh man what a weekend! Nothing like waking up at 4am to shower and pack up the truck and hit the road by 6am. On the plus side we got to to see the sun rise!

We made it to Winnie, Texas about 7:30ish and started setting up our little area to start working on our entries. My parents brought the generator to run our microwave since our dishes had to be turned in at the serving temperature of the dish. My dad also brought a propane tank to have a stove top to thicken his risotto.

Before I get to my dishes and show you what I won I'll show you the results from the photo contest. I won second place in black and white with my photo of an owl and third place with a guy and his dog at the meat counter which was taken from our trip to Barcelona.

Now on to the food! Here's what I took home....1 first place, 1 second place and 2 third places! I really wanted the trophy, but I can't complain after placing in all of my dishes except 2.

In the appetizer category our Italian Rice Crisp won a 2nd place.

Taking home the first place where the Crab Rice Stuffing. These are the perfect party food and super easy to make ahead of time then pop in the oven to heat up as you need them.

My main dish was similar to the one I made for Katy with a few changes made to it, which took home 3rd place.

I was most excited about my dessert. A Red White and Brulee dish which had a rice base topped with a custard and raspberries and a nice crsip sugar crust. Only flaw was something happened on the trip to Winnie and my sugar was no longer crisp it broke down to a wet mess. After soaking it up with paper towels and my mom finding someone with sugar packets I re-torched the dessert which brought it back to life. Well, after all that it broke down again and didn't take home a prize.

For miscellanious I entered my eclairs again and changed up the filling and used rice crispies in the eclair dough instead of rice. They won 3rd place.

I also made my Parmesan Ring Salad with Caesar dressing, and I was shocked it didn't place. Oh well, can't win them all!

As for my parents they did really good too. This year the lowered the age for seniors so I didn't have to compete against them this time.

Here's my dad's Coconut and Pineapple Rice Pudding with Lychee Fruit which placed 1st.

My mom's Rice Krispies Fruit and Nut Bars placed 1st.

Dad's 2nd place Chcolate Chip Rice Bon Bon's

Mom's Way Too Easy Risotto got 2nd Place.

Dad's Leftover Rice and Veggie Risotto placed 1st.

Dad's Brie Stuffed Chicken Breast and Herb Rice got 3rd.

Dad's Texas Boudain placed 2nd.

Overall we had a great time and we couldn't have asked for any better weather then clear skies and it being in the 60's. Now on to dreaming up new ideas for next year!!
